Materials we will need:
Propolis, Ethyl Alcohol 95 ° (distillery), Airtight jar, Coffee filter, Syringe, Small vials and a scale.
Procedure:
Step 1
- Collect the Propolis from the hive which should be free of foreign bodies, wax, paint, wood, etc.
- The collection is done either by scraping the various parts of the hive or using special screens (cleaner).
- Crush the larger pieces into smaller ones.
Step 2
- Clean the propolis by spreading it on a large surface and remove foreign bodies with the eye
- Place the propolis in a container of cold water, stir and remove any foreign matter floating. Repeat the process if necessary.
- Allow the propolis to dry.
Beware of high temperatures because if the propolis gets too hot it is difficult to use. Thus, we keep it in the freezer
Step 3
- Calculate the ratio you will use.
- Usually the ratio (1: 3) is applied, ie one part of raw propolis to 3 parts of Alcohol 95 °.
Be careful that the propolis tincture should not exceed 30%.
Step 4
- After placing the mixture in an airtight jar, leave it in a dark place away from moisture.
- In the first week, shake the mixture once or twice a day.
- Leave the mixture for at least a month so that the alcohol absorbs the propolis components more effectively.
Step 5
- The mixture is ready! With the use of a syringe, collect the liquid portion of the mixture, being careful not to retract any of the sediment into the syringe.
- Finally we filter our mixture with the use coffee filter. We then fill bottles with the filtered liquid, and the propolis tincture is ready for use!
In addition, the left over propolis sediments can be used as an ointment or even fertilizer for our favorite plants.
The resulting propolis solution is very useful for internal or external use, because Propolis has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial traits
